At Blackburne House, we love to see our amazing students reaching their goals. We caught up with ambitious Kate, whose hard work has led her to a new career where she will provide invaluable care as a nurse in our wonderful NHS.
What was your life like before Blackburne House?
My life was chaotic! Mum to 4 children, 3 of whom have extra needs, so it could be very hard sometimes. I felt like I didn't have any time for myself as a person or as a woman.
What made you get back into education?
I needed something for myself, I needed to find myself again and rediscover my passions.
Why did you choose to study at Blackburne House and how did you hear about it?
I saw an advert on Facebook, I pondered over it for a while and attended an open day. Gemma, my tutor, was so enthusiastic about the course and its contents that I decided to take the leap and sign up that day!
What did you study and how did you find returning to education?
I studied Access to Health and loved it. I'm not going to lie, it was difficult at first; trying to find that college/home life balance was a learning process, but I have a great support system and the tutors were amazing. They understand that sometimes our home life comes first but you get out what you put in.
Why did you choose that course?
I have always wanted to be involved in healthcare but life seemed to get in the way, work or family always seemed to come first.
How did you find your experience at Blackburne House?
It was brilliant, the tutors (Jane, Gemma and Kerry) were fantastic! They were so supportive and encouraging to all the members of my class.
What would you say to other women thinking of going back into education?
You can do it, you honestly won't regret it! I have made friends for life and gained so many skills during my time here. It's an adventure. Embrace being at Blackburne House, because it flies!

What have you done with your qualifications?
I applied for a Bachelor's degree in nursing at Liverpool John Moore's University, my tutors helped and encouraged me throughout the whole process.
What are you doing now?
I am studying at LJMU and I love it, I wouldn't be here without my start at Blackburne House!
What are your aspirations for the future?
I aim to qualify as a nurse by 2025, I'm looking forward to providing healthcare to my patients and being an integral part of our amazing NHS! Blackburne House will always hold a special place in my heart and I hope to make my tutors proud. I'm looking forward to the day I can come back wearing my cap and gown, and walk up those steps again - but this time with a degree!
